Aww coffee, the magical morning elixir. My love affair with coffee goes way back. I have started my day with a cup of coffee for as long as I can remember. I’m a creature of habit, what can I say. Most days, I even drink my daily coffee from the same sentimental mug, a mug given to me by my late grandmother. This prized mug also has my favorite Eleanor Roosevelt quote printed on it.
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
Eleanor Roosevelt
How’s that for starting of each day off with a positive affirmation?! In fact, I can partially credit that coffee cup along with the copious amount of coffee I consumed (to keep me awake late at night studying) with obtaining my Veterinary degree. Living in the Pacific Northwest at the time with its dreary overcast skies and coffee shops on every corner certainly didn’t help my coffee addiction.
Coffee also holds a very special place in my heart for another reason. The first blind date with my now husband was shared over, you guessed it, coffee. We are both coffee lovers. Unlike weekday mornings where we are forced to chug our coffee rushing out the door out, weekend mornings are meant for savoring every last sip. As such, our weekend coffee game has been elevated in our household and is now a sacred weekly tradition.
Weekend coffee in our home calls for BIG cozy mugs and a lot more indulgence. We often top our weekend coffee with fresh whipped cream, seasonal creamers, a sprinkle of cinnamon, or even my favorite a caramel drizzle. Sometimes weekend coffee is served in bed, or while cozied up on the couch together with our dogs, or while enjoying being outside. We make it a little different every time. The goal of this tradition is to make it intentional and to enjoy both it and our time spent together.
The term “weekend coffee” has even become a term of endearment between us because on special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries, we often surprise each other with weekend coffee in the middle of the week. It’s our special way of saying “I love you.”
Whether you’re a fancy coffee drinker or not, isn’t it amazing how the same pot of coffee always tastes better on the weekends? So take the time to smell the roses, and savor your coffee.
